Why is a Wine Glass… shaped like a Wine Glass?

It’s a question lots of people have wondered. There are a few different kinds of wine glasses  – which can especially vary for dessert wines – but we are talking our typical white and red wines here. They retain more or less a similar shape. What’s the purpose of that shape?
